Review: Swann Smart Security Camera

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had the chance to spend some time with a new smart camera from Swann – the aptly named Swann Smart Security Camera.

Initially, I was intrigued to see how a “traditional” CCTV manufacture like Swann, with their old-school, bulky, hard-wired security systems, would compete against newer, funkier brands like Nest, Canary, Arlo and so on. But colour me impressed.

While the industrial design borrows heavily from competitors (Netgear Arlo in particular), the weatherproof, rechargeable and fully-wireless device is simple to use and great to get along with. Equally comfortable mounted inside or outside the home, the Swann Smart Security Camera doesn’t offer all of the smart features and granular configuration settings that advanced users are seeking. But decent image quality, heat sensitive intruder detection, responsive notifications and – best of all – local storage add up to a very well equipped security device.

On the flip side, I did experience an issue trying to get the camera up and running on my Google Pixel XL smartphone and had to resort to an iOS device. An irritating, recurring clicking noise from the camera, as it wakes and powers down, is another blot on the copy book. Certainly, there are one or two niggles still to be ironed out. But a retail price of $150 (you’ll find it cheaper if you hunt around) is not to be sniffed at for a smart, 1080p high definition security camera of this quality.

At this price, few competitors can beat the versatility and simplicity Swann Smart Security Camera’s versatility and simplicity. Read the full review to find out more.
