NETGEAR introduces eight port Nighthawk S8000 Gaming Switch

To date, NETGEAR’s popular Nighthawk product range has predominately focused on routers, with the occasional modem and range extender thrown in. In Las Vegas this week, at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, the company is launching its first Nighthawk branded switch.

The eight port NETGEAR Nighthawk S8000 Gaming Switch (GS808E) is billed as a high performance, easily configurable, Layer 2 switch that’s ideal for “expert gaming” and HD media streaming. I’m sure, like me, you’re asking yourself how this $99.99 switch differs from that classic (and much cheaper) NETGEAR GS108 switch you have knocking around the house.

Aside from a snazzy chassis, unlike that simple “plug and play” (unmanaged) switch, the new Nighthawk Gaming Switch includes the full set of NETGEAR Web Managed (Plus) Switch software features. They include the ability to configure each of the eight Gigabit Ethernet ports separately in a web browser, with settings saved to the switch. You’ll find [re-configured settings that automatically configure ports for gaming, media streaming, or as a standard LAN port for surfing, VoIP or video calls.

In addition, link aggregation (LAG), or "port trunking” features allow you to create connections up to 4 Gbps to other link aggregation-capable devices, such as NAS server or PC with a compatible network adapter.

Other features include:

  • Sleek, durable, "cool-touch” premium zinc alloy housing design with soft-touch no-slip base
  • Easy, one-click optimized configuration presets for gaming, media streaming, or standard networking, plus two user-defined configurations
  • Port-based and 802.1p/DSCP-based QoS (Quality of Service) for 4 levels of network traffic prioritization
  • Auto "denial-of-service” (DoS) prevention
  • IGMP snooping support for multicast optimization
  • Loop detection and broadcast storm controls
  • Rate limiting and priority queuing for better bandwidth allocation
  • Port trunking/link aggregation (LAG) enables increased throughput beyond 1Gbps [up to 4Gbps] or to provide redundancy across the link(s)
  • Industry-leading limited 3-year warranty and multiple support options

Expect to see the NETGEAR Nighthawk S8000 Gaming Switch (GS808E) arrive in stores in March.
