LIFX Unveils Infrared-Enabled Smart Lighting for Enhanced Smart Home Security

While the smart home lighting market is growing quickly, for the consumer, it can seem that every manufacturer is currently offering a similar range of features at similar price points. Enter LIFX who today announced two new innovative smart home lighting solutions that take the category forward in new ways.

LIFX+ is billed as the “first color smart bulb to incorporate patented pending Infrared technology”. It allows existing smart home security cameras to see further than ever before without the need for any additional software integration.

Check out these “before and after” shots showing the benefit security cameras receive from the Infrared-enabled bulb.

The Wi-Fi connected bulb produces 16 million colours with an output of 1100 lumens, the equivalent of a 75 Watt traditional incandescent bulb, with just 11W energy use. As it connects directly to your wireless network, doesn’t require a standalone hub. That said, it still integrates with Nest, Amazon Echo, Samsung SmartThings, IFTTT, Flic, Scout and others.

Priced at $79.99, the LIFX+ is available to pre-order now, and will ship in November in A19 and an indoor/outdoor rated BR30 format.

Accompanying the new LIFX+ is a custom-controlled coloured lighting strip, the LIFX Z. The company boasts that the LIFX Z is the first Wi-Fi connected smart strip to be able to have multiple colors per strip. An $89.99 Starter Kit provides an initial 2m strip with extensions available in 1m ($29.99) and 4m ($99.96) formats.

Each strip is capable of 700 lumens per meter, with 8 individually addressable zones per meter. With extensions, a maximum length of 10m can be achieved. The LIFX Z is dimmable and again supports 16 million colours, connecting over Wi-Fi to your home network. Expected bulb life is almost twenty-three years with just 17W energy use (per two metres).
