Review: Belkin PowerHouse Charge Dock for Apple Watch + iPhone

If you’re a fan of technology like we are, no doubt your household is strewn with charging cables and adapters. Nowhere in the home has greater potential for charging chaos than the bedside cabinet. Multiple phones, tablets, smart watches, bedside lamps, fitness trackers – all desperate for a nightly charge – leading to a spaghetti of USB and lightning cables cluttering your space.

If you’re seeking a solution to calm and declutter your sleeping area – or you’re under pressure to do so from a significant other – then accessories specialists like Belkin, Logitech and others will become firm friends. The mobile accessories market has exploded with charging solutions over the last few years – many useful, some ingenious and more than a few that are downright weird.

At the top end of the market, hardcore Apple fans are already rocking an iPhone/Apple Watch combo. Charging two devices nightly (along with that iPad Pro you know isn’t too far away) can be made more convenient with accessories like the Belkin PowerHouse Charge Dock for Apple Watch + iPhone. It’s designed to cradle and charge both devices with a single power cable.

Sadly, that iPad Pro isn’t invited, but at least it’ll cut down on some of that bedside spaghetti. The guys at Belkin sent over a PowerHouse Charge Dock for us to check out. Let’s take a brief look at how it works.

What’s in the Box?

Clad in the bright white and lime packaging that protects all of Belkin’s kit, the PowerHouse Charge Dock offers the kind of premium unboxing experience that Apple fans demand – a world away from the Johnny No-brand accessories that line the virtual shelves of Amazon et al. nowadays.

The substantial box includes the dock itself, carefully protected from scratches in a thick plastic bag, an accompanying power adapter and a quick start guide. It’s straightforward enough, but exudes the kind of quality you’d expect from a $100 charging accessory.

Built from a solid slab of white acrylic, the PowerHouse is both sturdy and weighty ensuring that it won’t slide around your bedside cabinet without a little force.

The power cable connects neatly to a rear port and just above you’ll find a VersaCase wheel that adjusts the height of the Lightning power connector on the front tray. The connector is adjustable both in height as well angle, ensuring that the PowerHouse is compatible with “most”cases.

A softer, rubberised plastic coats the PowerHouse’s front tray, protecting your devices from scratches. The we get to the clever bit. The PowerHouse includes an integrated Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Module that protrudes from one side of the dock, suspending the Apple Watch neatly over your bedside cabinet while it charges.

The PowerHouse supports a number of devices, including iPhone SE, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition. I’m assuming the list will be expanded to include the latest iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2, but I’m sure we can expect a dedicated range of upcoming accessories for those devices from Belkin too.

Using the PowerHouse is very straightforward – with 3.4A total power (1A for Apple Watch, 2.4A for iPhone) the device will charge both the Apple Watch and iPhone simultaneously. It’s also pretty compact, so won’t take up too much space on the cabinet. I found connecting devices to the PowerHouse was easy – after I’d adjusted the VersaCase wheel to accept the narrow case surrounding my iPhone 6 and charging was as fast as you’d find from first-party accessories.

Summary

The Belkin PowerHouse Charge Dock for Apple Watch + iPhone is a high-quality accessory that looks great on the bedside table and will certainly help tackle the mess of wires found in most bedrooms nowadays. For $99.99, however, I’d like the charger to offer a little more. An additional USB pass through outlet for charging an iPad, second iPhone or a microUSB device would make the PowerHouse even more useful and help to justify the high ticket price.

Otherwise, the Belkin PowerHouse makes for a great gift for the Apple fan in your life and is a great way to keep your home or office clutter free.
