WD My Passport Cinema Offers New Route for 4K HDR Movie Distribution

Western Digital today announced the WD My Passport Cinema 4K Ultra HD, a 1 TB hard drive that’s designed to offer a convenient way to build and store an Ultra High Definition movie library.

The USB 3.0 drive plugs directly into a compatible 4K Ultra HD TV, enabling movie buffs to  purchase preloaded movies from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. The drive supports the VIDITY standard and in response to your upcoming question, “What the heck is VIDITY?” I’ll refer you to the following statement:

“VIDITY is the consumer brand created by The Secure Content Storage Association (SCSA), a consortium of leading companies in the entertainment industry and digital storage space that breaks the boundaries in home movie watching by delivering unprecedented quality for digital playback of locally stored premium content. Amazing quality video with no Internet needed for playback.”

The idea is to allow consumers to purchase and store 4K movies on a local hard drive, rather than stream the entertainment over the Internet. While we’re still waiting for 4K HDR Blu-ray players to emerge, VIDITY offers a way of distributing large movie files without the need for superfast broadband connections.

Once purchased on the My Passport Cinema drive, movies can be accessed immediately online or offline on any VIDITY-enabled device such as Samsung’s 2014 HU series 4K UHD TVs and 2015 JU and JS series 4K UHD and SUHD TVs. From August 16, 2015, to June 30, 2016, a My Passport Cinema drive will be included free with the purchase of Samsung JS9000, JS9100 or JS9500 SUHD TV models. Additional titles can be purchased via M-GO or other VIDITY retailers, with the My Passport Cinema drive storing up to 13 4K UHD full-length movies.

At launch, pre-loaded 4K movies include The Maze Runner, Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Wolverine, Let’s Be Cops, The Other Woman, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Fault In Our Stars. The new drive allows UHD TV owners to experience the highest resolutions, frame rates, audio and color formats available (including High Dynamic Range) without the buffering, image stuttering and quality changes associated with streaming services.

Western Digital and Samsung are cross-promoting their 4K devices with a special offer that delivers two unlocked 4K UHD movies when you purchase a Samsung JS9000 and above 4K SUHD TV model. Just plug in your My Passport Cinema drive, launch the M-GO app and enjoy the action.

The $89.99 WD My Passport Cinema UHD is now shipping direct from WD and selected retailers.
